Since May 8, 1877, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has brought some of the most prestigious dogs to New York City for competitions in breed, junior showmanship, group, and Best In Show. The competition even inspired the 2000 comedy film Best In Show, which stars SCTV alumni Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara.
When it comes to winners, the Terrier Group have been victorious with 45 wins for Best In Show. Female dogs have won Best In Show 35 times while male dogs took the title 68 times. As one would expect, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show appreciates man’s best friend.
This year, however, things will change drastically.
For the first time in its 141 years of existence, the dog show will include cats. The inclusion of felines will be for a special showcase titled American Kennel Club Meet the Breeds, which is a public event.
This is the fourth time that The International Cat Association have teamed up with AKC. These cats won’t be battling the dogs, but they will be competing in small tests of strength.
The felines won’t be around for the whole event, though. They’re only slated to appear on February 11, and they can’t win any awards. Fans can expect to see over 40 different breeds of cats on that day.
The 2017 installment of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will take place from February 11 through February 14. The daytime competitions will take place at The Piers 92/94 (711 12th Ave. at 55th St. & West Side Highway), and the evening sessions will be held at Madison Square Garden (West 33rd St. & 7th Ave.).
The event will be aired in the United States on FS1, Fox Sports Go, and Nat. Geo. Wild. For Canadian viewers, it will be aired on Fox Sports Racing. Tickets for the event can be purchased here. You can find more information about the American Kennel Club on their website.
