Richard Lee, a man of Asian descent from New Zealand, had his passport photograph rejected because facial recognition software thought his eyes were closed.
According to him, the error said,
The photo you want to upload does not meet our criteria because:
Subject eyes were closed.
As if once was not enough, he was asked by the software to repeat the photo 9 times!
Mr. Lee later posted what happened on Facebook,
“No hard feelings on my part, I’ve always had very small eyes and facial recognition technology is relatively new and unsophisticated. “
He also added,
“It was a robot, no hard feelings. I got my passport renewed in the end.”
Kudos to Mr. Lee for not reporting the racist SOB robot and taking the high road, and may I just say, that passport photo is amazing. Most people look as if there was a wind storm followed by a drop in gravity that caused ungodly wrinkles and double chins.
As for the robot, you better watch yourself…
