This happened days ago, before the nightmare that is Charlottesville, but recently James Woods, the actor (and Trump fan) had the audacity to retweet a meme likening Senator Bernie Sanders to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. The tweet looked like this:
Well, both… https://t.co/FN3mrho9xa

"We're socialists…enemies of today's capitalist system of exploitation & we're determined to destroy it"–Bernie, 2017? No, Hitler, 1927 pic.twitter.com/Civ1ZRAD1u

Where to even begin. Imagine looking at the current political climate and deciding this horrible comparison was worth a retweet. Adolf Hitler was a fascist. He killed six million Jews, he killed disabled people and homosexuals, purely because he didn’t like them. He believed in the Aryan race and blamed Jews for all of Germany’s problems. He was the epitome of evil.
Who is Bernie Sanders? He is a man who calls for unity, he is Jewish himself. He fought for civil rights. He believes in healthcare for all, a liveable wage, free education, and to make society fairer. In these ways, yes he is a socialist.
Hitler was busy in the 1930s pointing his finger at Jews being the reason Germany was facing economic ruin (with huge reparations from the Treaty of Versailles being the real reason). In great contrast Sanders has dedicated his life to achieve a fairer distribution of wealth in society and opposes anyone who scapegoats certain groups in society.
He stands up to Wall St, he votes against wars, he cares about the downtrodden.
This meme is shocking for so many reasons, but most of all it is a huge insult to a man who has integrity. To say that far-right Nazi totalitarians (socialist in name only) were anything like Bernie Sanders is complete and utter rubbish.
What America sees as extreme, most of the rest of the Western world sees as normal. Medicare for all is not a pipe dream, it is a reality in many countries. It is certainly not a fascist policy or idea. The United States of America is the wealthiest country in the world and should be able to care for its sick and its poor.
So James Woods retweets this meme and then what does he say of the Charlottesville debacle? Anything? No comment at all about any possible connection between Trump and white supremacists?
What a disgraceful attempt to smear Bernie’s good name. Utterly disgraceful.
