Huge fans of The Simpsons will be happy to to hear that there is a new animated show from the same creator, Matt Groening. The Netflix show is called Disenchanted and will be set in Medieval Times. Set in a castle, it will feature characters including an elf, a demon, and a drinking princess.
A statement from the online streaming network put out said it will include:
…Ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses and lots of human fools.
Netflix has agreed to 20 episodes and fans all around the world are anticipating this new show.
Groening has said Disenchanted is set in Dreamland, a medieval kingdom that is falling apart and will be about:
…Life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.
The series will start in 2018 on Netflix with voices including Futurama star Maurice LaMarche and Simpsons’ voice Tress MacNeille along with other actors, with many hoping this will be as iconic and witty as The Simpsons itself.
Futurama is another series Groening created after his first hit and while it did not match the success of The Simpsons, it still has a cult like following. The Simpsons often time traveled to future and past eras. Perhaps the time setting chosen by Groening for this new show was somehow influenced by the popularity of Game of Thrones.
The success of The Simpsons is impressive. It somehow epitomizes modern family life with imperfect, flawed, yet lovable characters. The ongoing series has won a number of Emmys and enjoys popularity across generations. The beauty of The Simpsons is its down-to-earth postmodernism, the use of guest stars, the ability to predict the future (President Donald Trump anyone?), and the sharp and funny writing.
Matt Groening has said he loosely based The Simpsons family on his own. The artist’s sarcasm and humor has shone through his creations, and no doubt people will be hoping Disenchanted offers the same kind of insightfulness.
