Have you ever been woken up by a strange noise? Sometimes the noise starts out as part of your dream, but as you slowly come awake, you realize it’s the dog snoring.
One young man had a similar experience recently, except that his could have ended really badly.
As in, he could have woken up dead. If you know what I mean.
It was about four o’clock in the morning in the mountains of Colorado. Nineteen-year-old Dylan was working at an outdoor adventures camp, teaching survival and wilderness skills to young teens.
Dylan and the kids were all asleep under the stars when the young man became aware of a “crunching sound” somewhere close by. So he did what anyone would do. He opened his eyes.
That’s when he realized that he was looking up the nose of the black bear who had grabbed him by the head. The bear was dragging him along the ground.
The “crunching sound” was made by the bear’s gigantic teeth scraping along his skull bones.
Way worse than a snoring dog.
Dylan reacted with the finely honed skills of a trained survivalist. He screamed and started punching the bear in the face. He said:
I just started hitting the bear as hard as I could.
And I found its eye, and I started poking its eye with my fingers.
Luckily for Dylan, his fight with the bear woke up the rest of the campers. Anyone who has ever spent a weekend camping with teenagers will understand what happened next.
The bear ran into the woods.
Dylan was treated for his injuries at a local hospital, and will be fine. Hopefully the bear will have learned its lesson and will stay far away from humans in the future.
