An Allentown, Pennsylvania, woman is in jail after she reportedly shot a gun near her inattentive husband.
Mercedes Rosario, 43, still lives with her estranged husband. She is in jail because she couldn’t post bail on her charge of reckless endangerment. Rosario became upset because her husband wouldn’t listen to her.
During the argument, she got the 9mm handgun off the shelf and fired it into the wall in his direction.
She has a preliminary hearing scheduling for June 28.
There was a similar case in Florida back in 2012. Marissa Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison after firing what she called a “warning shot” near her husband during an argument.
Congresswoman Corrine Brown (D-Fla.) said this about the verdict:
“The Florida criminal justice system has sent two clear messages today. One is that if women who are victims of domestic violence try to protect themselves, the ‘Stand Your Ground Law’ will not apply to them…The second message is that if you are black, the system will treat you differently.”
Florida has a “stand your ground” law which is supposed to be used to protect yourself if an intruder enters your home or if someone attacks you in your home. Alexander believed that she was in danger when she fired that shot.
