Sometimes it is the little moments that turn out to be huge. One such moment occurred on Thursday at the NATO summit in Brussels.
As is traditional, the spouses of the world leaders in attendance gathered for a group photo. Nothing new there. What was wonderful is that without pomp or fanfare Luxembourg’s ‘first gentleman’ Gauthier Destenay was one of the first spouses to wander in alongside the First Lady of Iceland Thora Margret Baldvinsdottir and the partner of Slovenia’s Prime Minister Mojca Stropnik.
Still not a big deal unlesss you know that Destenay is the husband of Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel. The couple married in 2015 when the country gave equal marriage rights to couples regardless of their sexual orientation and Bettel is currently the world’s only openly gay leader.
This is the happy couple on their wedding day with Destenay on the left and Prime Minister Bettel on the right.
The rest of the spouse wandered in by twos and threes and the final photo included Queen Mathilde of Belgium, the First Lady of France Brigitte Macron, First Lady of Turkey Emine Gulbaran Erdogan, First Lady of the US Melania Trump, Jen’s Stoltenberg’s partner Ingrid Schulerud, the partner of Bulgaria’s President Desislava Radeva and the partner of Charles Michel Amelie Derbaudrenghien.
