One of Paul Newman’s most notable movies was Cool Hand Luke, a 1967 prison drama. He played Luke, an inmate who wouldn’t conform to life behind bars. So it shouldn’t be that surprising that an inmate recited lines from it while being executed.
J.W. Ledford, Jr. was executed last Wednesday at 1:17 am in Georgia. He originally wanted to die by a firing squad, but the court went with lethal injection. He stabbed Dr. Harry Johnston to death back in 1993.
Before flashing a creepy smile and referencing Cool Hand Luke, Ledford consumed a meal fit for a king: deep fried pork chops, chicken tenders, bacon and pepper jack cheese-wrapped filet mignon, a blooming onion, some pie, sherbet, ice cream and a Sprite.
More like a white trash king.
As he sat there with a full stomach, he was asked if he had any last words. He recited the following infamous lines from the movie:
“What we have here is a failure to communicate. Some men just can’t get reach. I am not the failure. You are the failure to communicate. You can kiss my white trash a**.”
And with a creepy smile flashed across his face, he passed on. Thanks for ruining that movie for us, sir.
