Mexico City has designed their metro trains to have some seats that are moulded into the shape of a male lap. The seat includes plastic moulded legs and bumpy groin area. It is no doubt very uncomfortable to sit on, but that is the whole point. Above the ‘penis seats’ as some have called them is a sign that reads:
It’s uncomfortable to sit here but it doesn’t compare with the sexual violence that women suffer in their everyday lives. 9 out of 10 women in Mexico City have been victims of some form of sexual violence.
Certainly many commuters must have got quite a shock sitting down unexpectedly on a lap which includes the shape of a semi-erect penis. This shock might help people understand how many victims of sexual harassment often feel.
Nine out of ten is a devastating number of women who have been victims of some sort of sexual violence. These are sisters, wives, daughters, and mothers.
Many women learn from a young age that some men feel they have to right to brush up against them in a sexual way with no invitation. It is a violation and as they say it is better to ‘show’ people how it feels rather than just tell them. Sitting on a bumpy, molded seat is still not nearly as humiliating as being grabbed, harassed, molested, or objectified in reality.
Perhaps President Donald Trump could learn a thing or two from taking a few metro rides around Mexico City. He has bragged about grabbing women and has been adamant about building a wall along the Mexican border. I am sure many people would have a lot to say to him on both subjects.
Sometimes people do not understand how damaging what they are doing actually is, until the shoe is on the other foot.
Sexual Harassment is uncomfortable and well done to Mexico City for addressing it in this confronting way.
