You may have read this week, about the plan Crayola has to kill off one of their beloved colors this Friday, on World Crayon Day. The company made the announcement on its social media channels two days ago causing shock and horror to reverberate around the world.

“The color will be retired across the entire crayon portfolio including the iconic 24 and 64 count boxes as well as all other Crayon products”

In an evil twist designed to keep us on our toes, Crayola decided to announce the retirement early and told the world today that the Dandelion crayon will be leaving the iconic box of 24 crayons.

Well, actually it was because of a New Jersey branch of Target who started to stock their shelves today using boxes of 120 crayons emblazoned with the message “Dandelion is retiring! Get it NOW!” The boxes were noticed by Twitter user @frankieinternet who shared his knowledge with the world.

In response, Crayolas spokesperson said that because Dandelion was so excited, he snuck a few packages out of the factory and onto the shelves a day early. He also said

“Our beloved Dandelion had a case of wanderlust and decided to announce his retirement early! There’s no taming an adventurous spirit.”

Dandelion has been with Crayola for 27 years and has been part of the 24 pack for 18.

The company has dropped unpopular colors, including magic mint, mulberry, blizzard blue, and teal blue but this will be the first time a color has been retired from the classic box that we all proudly carried to school each September.

The current 24-count Crayola box contains red, yellow, blue, brown, orange, green, violet, black, carnation pink, yellow orange, blue green, red violet, red orange, yellow green, blue violet, white, violet red, dandelion, cerulean, apricot, scarlet, green yellow, indigo and gray.

Crayola has reassured us that we will still be able to get the correct number of crayons in our boxes.

“Crayola is all about innovating with color so consumers can expect that there will be a new, exciting color coming soon! Of course, the 24 box will always have that number of crayons.”

More details — including the new color set to join the 24-count box — will be unveiled Friday at a Crayola event in Times Square, which will be live streamed on Facebook.
