They’ve gone and done it now. Vice President Mike Pence had to break the tie, but the Senate has passed a bill they’ve been wanting. They are trying to defund Planned Parenthood. It now goes to President Donald Trump for signature.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said this about it:
“It would let states treat women as second-class citizens who don’t deserve the same access to health care as men.”
Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood, said this in a statement:
“Mike Pence went from yesterday’s forum on empowering women to today leading a group of male politicians in a vote to take away access to birth control and cancer screenings. There’s a reason they could barely get enough votes to get this bill through a procedural step: People are sick and tired of politicians making it even harder for them to access health care, and they will not stand for it.”
Republicans have been trying to defund abortion providers for years, but the fight was brought up anew two years ago when a group of pro-lifers put out a video smearing Planned Parenthood. At least they are getting charged with felonies now.
Mike Pence is an Evangelical Christian who has been fighting against abortion for years. As Governor of Indiana, he signed one of the most restrictive anti-abortion bills in the country. It banned abortion even in cases of “genetic abnormalities” in the baby.
