We obviously live in a digital age. It is like we have taken the actual world and duplicated it online. We have made ‘Smart’ versions of many items. The phone in our pockets has access to more information than ever imagined by people centuries ago.
Well, with this advancement also comes a catch. Everything is now seemingly recorded, privacy is fading. We-Vibe is a company that makes sex toys and vibrators and at the moment they are being sued for millions of dollars by someone who claims the company has been keeping intimate details about them. The customer is known only as N.P. from Chicago.
Eve-Lynn Rapp, the lawyer for the claimant has said:
It has come to our attention that the company was actually recording specific information about her and other individuals usage of the device. That would include when it’s on, how long it’s being used for, what settings it’s on, the temperature of the device … When that came to light, [our client] was, understandably, pretty upset.
How were they able to do this? The vibrator comes with an app that when downloaded by the customer allowed the product’s use to be tracked. Worryingly, the extent of details known by the company become even more intrusive as Rapp adds:
If [the customer] is connected to the app, their email address could be on there. The company will also track the IP address — which would allow them to understand where [the customer] is located.
The company We-Vibe have admitted they do collect some information, their statement is as follows:
We do collect certain limited data to help us improve our products and for diagnostic purposes … As a matter of practice, we use this data in an aggregate, non-identifiable form.
This is not enough for Rapp who believes any data they collect would be specific and extremely intimate given the nature of their products.
The moral here is if you want to keep details of your sex life private, you might have to stick with doing things the old fashioned way.
