CAIR, the Council for American-Islamic Relations, has created a webpage where those against a Muslim Registry can pledge their signature that if one were to be enacted, regardless of religious affiliation, they would register their person. So far the registry has had over 1300 American citizens sign up online.
When getting to the home page of the website it states:
A Muslim registry is unconstitutional, ineffective, and un-American. It’s happened once before. It didn’t work then. It won’t work now. Join the 1359 citizens that have already committed to keeping it from coming back.
The site refers to NSEERS, the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System, which was enacted in 2002 and ran until the Obama administration in 2012. The program forced immigrants from primarily Muslim faith nations to register into the database.
After a tumultuous election season where the term “Muslim Registry” was thrown around at every turn including by Trump himself as well as former Mayor Rudy Guiliani, people are wondering if it something that will ultimately come to fruition. As CAIR’s site points out, it may not be legal to name it a Muslim registry, they can recreate NSEERS and target those of Muslim faith just as the current “travel ban” does.
A Muslim registry in this country would not only undermine the constitution but it would also show the United States as a weak and fascist country. CAIR states:
American credibility as a land of liberty would take a heavy blow. Other targeted minorities would likely become more vulnerable. Muslims who have fought alongside our troops around the world would be told their sacrifices are unworthy of American appreciation. Foreign governments would use America’s miss-step as an excuse to crack down on their own minorities.
It is time to take a stand against these religious attacks against people of other faiths. You can find the registry here.
