Five moms in Japan are trying a new fad to deal with their post-pregnancy aches and pains. A midwife from Kyoto thought mimicking the way they swaddle babies.
Otonamaki, or “adult wrapping,” involves laying on the ground with your knees against your chest with a blanket wrapped around you. Then, they roll you around while in this position. It is meant to help with post-labor shoulder and hip pain. They roll you around on cushions while you are wrapped up.
A chiropractor, Shiro Oba, is not a fan of this. He said:
“There may be cases where people with asthma may find it easier to breath (in that position), but once the cloth is off it’s the same thing.”
“… But apart from that, I just can’t think of how people can benefit from this even as a form of reflexology or exercise.”
Being stretched like this is similar to many yoga positions. Plus, being rocked back and forth might be comforting. It could have the same health benefits that yoga does.
The benefits of this have not been studied, so we’re not sure what the effects are. I would think you’d get claustrophobic, but maybe that’s just me.
