Chelsea Handler, comedian, women’s rights advocate, and host of the streaming Netflix original, “Chelsea,” sat down with Variety to really talk about what the election and what President-elect Trump means to her and this country.
As usual Handler never holds back, but talks about how difficult it is sometimes to draw the line between too serious and comedian, who people expect to be completely honest about the issues. Handler, the day after the election, had the same reaction as many of us did; running as far away as possible seemed the only choice. But, when she arrived at her office, the girls that surrounded her quickly changed her mind. Handler stated:
“They all just said, ‘You’re our only outlet. You’re our mouthpiece.’ That will motivate anybody, and it motivates me.”
Handler went on to discuss the role that the election has played in her show as well as where she really felt this new wave of celebrity politics originated. Everyone seems to forget that not long ago Donald Trump was no more than some rich reality television star that no one really paid much attention to. Now he is the leader of our country, and entangled in some of the most controversial political espionage that we have seen in recent decades. Handler responded to what she would have done differently, saying:
“Stop covering [Trump] so much. They were treating him as an entertainer first. It was a reality show. We’ve turned into a reality show. I blame the Kardashians, personally; the beginning of the end was the Kardashians. The way these people have blown up and don’t go away — it’s surreal. Everyone is for sale. We’re looking at a man that gets mad at Vanity Fair for reviewing his restaurant poorly. By the way, have you ever been to that restaurant? It’s the biggest piece of garbage you’ve ever walked into. That place looks like a Southwest airport lounge. It’s the worst.”
With all of the crazy “fake news”allegations floating around it makes it difficult to really sift through the bullshit and get down to the truth. However, one thing we can definitely rely on is switching on Chelsea Handler and laughing and crying right along with her.
