Most young girls that are turned down when they ask for a horse get upset but move on and keep their dreams of riding free in the back of their minds, but not Hannah Simpson. At nearly twelve, when Hannah’s request was turned down for a horse she took her brother’s advice and turned to Lilac, the family cow. Simpson states:
“We just jumped on and away we went. There was no training. And she’s got better the more I ride her.”
Now, almost seven years later, Simpson still takes the family cow out but this time around Lilac does more than run, she trots and jumps small log hurdles. But don’t think Lilac does it unprompted. Simpson says:
“She is a cow, and I can’t expect her to ride like a horse. Without a bit of prodding she wouldn’t really do anything, she has a very chilled-out nature.”
Hannah has a horse she rides in shows but feels her relationship with Lilac is really special. Lilac also produces milk for the family and gave birth to twins just last year.
I guess when life gives you lemons…you ride a cow instead.
